A man holds the remote up to the TV, we see him from behind.

We want to share some of the ways our PossABLE Advocates have supported, changed lives and advocated for people with disability. This is *Kev's Story.

*Name changed for confidentiality.

I have this customer who was trying to access the NDIS, when he came on to my caseload he had tried twice but was unsuccessful. He had multiple issues. We submitted another review, this too was rejected by the NDIS. I liaised with his GP who was eager to assist us in any way he could. We made the fourth application and sent it off to the NDIA. They requested further information from his GP, and I liaised with his GP to get exactly what the NDIA wanted from us, we sent this off with fingers crossed.

I came back after days off a couple of weeks later to a message of YAHOO from the customer and telling me he had finally got a plan approved. I phoned the customer later that morning, it was like talking to a different person. He was on such a high. He will now get a hospital bed, so he no longer sleeps in a recliner chair every night, ramps at the front and back of the house, a support worker to assist him with daily living activities but most importantly 8 hours a week so he can access the community, go for a cuppa or meal. The impact this assistance will make on this gentleman’s life is enormous. He thanked me for all my assistance and for never giving up.

Kev is in his mid 60’s and has a back injury, diabetes and morbid obesity. He was accessing a Safe and Supported at Home (SaSh) program; however, the support was time-limited.

Kev had five unsuccessful NDIS access requests. Advocates made a further two unsuccessful NDIS Access Requests. The advocate requested a review of the most recent decision and contacted treating medical professionals to gain more supporting evidence.

Kev was granted access to NDIS following the review and new evidence. Kev will now be able to get a bariatric bed, so he doesn’t have to sleep in a reclining chair, ramps at the front and rear of the house, support workers and community access.

Kev is ecstatic with the outcome and the support PossABLE Advocacy provided.
