We want to share some of the ways our PossABLE Advocates have supported, changed lives and advocated for people with disability. This is *Mary’s story.

*Name changed for confidentiality.

Mary’s husband self-referred her to advocacy due to a housing issue.  Mary has health and disability issues. Their real estate agent told Mary and her family that they would have to vacate their rental property on Christmas Eve but, the agent would not assist them with securing other accommodation in the local area.

Mary and her family were facing being homeless at Christmas and living out of their car. We secured an NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing, and the family were given an extension of a month over the holidays. The Advocate attempted to contact the housing organisation dealing with Mary and her family, but to no avail, as emails and phone calls were not returned and Mary and her husband were having the same problem.

Mary’s husband asked if the Advocate could write to the Minister. Mary’s Advocate composed a letter to Minister Gareth Ward requesting his assistance in this matter and cc’d Ryan Park (Shadow Minister) into it. On Christmas Eve, Mary and her family were offered a house in Bomaderry. They have now moved into their new home and are very happy in it.
