Yesterday, a new report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) was published which discusses the health, well-being, employment, education and social inclusiveness and connectedness of people with disability living in Australia today.

More than 40 disability organisations across Australia have endorsed a Joint Position Statement from the Disabled People’s Organisation (DPO) Australia, which calls on the NDIA “to develop a comprehensive sexuality policy to continue reasonable and necessary support for sexual expression through NDIS funding”.

Most Australians prefer to die at home, but few adequately plan for it. Consequently, just one in seven dies at home. Some say they will make plans “when the need arises”. But what if you have a heart attack, go into a coma, have a stroke, or develop dementia before having shared your thoughts?

According to the Salvation Army’s financial counselling service, people aged 55 and over are requesting assistance and advice when they experience difficulties with their finances. Credit card debt is a major problem with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) noting that nearly 2 million Australians are affected.

 The stress of navigating your way through a busy airport can be hard for some people, so to have a system that lets the airport staff know you may need support or assistance can be a relief.

Thinking Outside the Box for Rural NDIS Supports. I am just back from 3 days attending AGQuip in Gunnedah. What an awesome rural event! We were lucky enough to be invited to share a site with The Land newspaper, and had some valuable conversations with country folk with lived experience of disability.

Schools are set up for students who can see. But around 3,000 school-aged children in Australia have a vision impairment – 300 of these have a severe vision impairment or are blind. These children are generally educated in mainstream schools, sometimes with little support for their needs.

The NDIS system relies on vulnerable people contacting them for help. However, many Australians with psychosocial disability experiencing homelessness are not reaching out to the NDIS, as their daily needs and priorities take precedence over seeking out assistance for their mental needs.
