Tax time is here, and the most reliable and accurate information is on the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website.

Read information on their People with disability page to see if you and your carer are eligible for tax and super concessions and exemptions.

This landing page is set out in a grid format with topic cards you can click on for more information. They also have easier-to-read guides.

Doing your tax

The ATO encourages people to:

  • Wait till later in July to do your tax return. By then, they will have received data from your employer, banks, government agencies and health funds. They’ll drop this information into your tax return to help you get it right the first time.
  • Lodge online using myTax, which is compatible with screen-reader software and can be used on any device such as a tablet, smartphone or computer. To use myTax, you need a myGov account linked to the ATO. There are instructions there on how to create an account if you don’t already have one.

You can also lodge with a registered tax agent. Make sure your tax agent is registered

If you need help doing your tax return, don’t forget to check out the Tax Help program. It’s free and staffed with accredited volunteers who can speak with you either online, by phone, or in person.

If you are deaf and hard of hearing

If you are deaf or find it hard hearing or speaking with people who use a phone, the National Relay Service (NRS) External Link can help you. There is also information in Auslan on how to manage your tax and superannuation

Nominating someone to act for you

If you know someone you trust, you can nominate them to act on your behalf. This does not mean you must give them access to your bank accounts, credit cards or other private information. There are different levels of authority you can give your representative.

Talk to customer service for more information by calling 13 28 66. You may have to wait in line if they are busy. Their busiest days are Mondays, so consider calling later in the week.

You can also contact them via social media, but be sure to avoid providing any personal information.
