It is important to be prepared and have a plan in case of an emergency. These four simple steps will help you to make an emergency plan.

Emergency ready is being prepared and having a plan when an emergency situation occurs. People with disability are at greater risk if they are underprepared.

In an emergency situation, a proactive approach to preparation will help. The following steps will assist preparation:

  1. Step 1 – Know yourself and your community – carry out a personal assessment that highlights any extra planning required or assistance that you may need in a specific area
  2. Step 2 – Make an emergency plan – detail your emergency contact list, both in the home and when you are out and about. Create a home evacuation plan outlining escape routes, location of important alarms and evacuation meeting points. Do you have any medical conditions that need to be considered? Do you have life support or other important equipment that electricity providers should be made aware of in the event of a blackout?
  3. Step 3 – Create an emergency list that contains all the items that you need. Have two kits, one for home and one for if you are evacuated
  4. Step 4 – review your plan on a regular basis – annually is a good indicator. Check expiry dates and the contents of the emergency kit and replace when required. Practice your emergency evacuation procedures
