Assuming that your customers have made it through the door, we’ve got 12 tips on how to make your venue space more accessible for people with disability. Remember, 78% of people with disabilities will make repeat visits to venues with good accessibility.

  1. Space, space, space. A great idea is to have some works displayed on tables so that wheelchair users can get closer to see the exhibit.
  2. All types of self-guided tours - such as Auslan, audio, musical, big print books, braille guides, and cut down catalogs.
  3. Get a big lift; we mean a really big lift
  4. Consider implementing autism friendly viewings or, as they are often called, “relaxed” viewings. These are not difficult to include: choose your quietest time, adjust your audio and lighting levels to lower the stimuli, and train staff to make everyone feel welcome. Auslan, or any basic sign language is a good addition for those without voice language.
  5. Provide water bowls for assistance dogs and easy entry and for them and their operator for relief.
  6. Information in alternative formats
  7. Take an audit of everything that your institution has in print, from signs to leaflets. Do you have audio versions of the leaflets? Do you have large print menus in your café?
  8. Is there an Auslan and captioned video to welcome people to the gallery right have front?
  9. Is there external signage about parking and bathrooms? Is there a ‘before your visit’ with accessible information on your website?
  10. Double check again your way finding and signage. Do not neglect your evacuation and safety signage
  11. Toilets. Toilets.Toilets – make sure that there are enough accessible toilets
  12. Be brave and encourage visitor reviews wherever they like, your pages, the internet, and trip advisor and other ratings apps
