Workshop

In this exciting new program, 12 two-week fellowships will be offered to writers with disability or who are D/deaf, with six residency fellowships and six online fellowships available.

This program has been generously supported by the NSW Government and is available to writers in New South Wales only.

Residency fellowships will be offered from 6 September to 20 September 2021 and will include:

·       A two-week residency at Varuna, with full board and accommodation including a prepared evening meal.

·       Uninterrupted time to write in your own private studio, and the companionship of your fellow writers.

·       A one-hour session (one-on-one) with Varuna writing consultant Dr Carol Major.

·       A small group online Q&A session with writer, speaker and disability activist Carly Findlay OAM.

·       A small group online Q&A session with best-selling writer Tara Moss.

·       A professional development package of $1,100 towards manuscript consultations, mentoring, or workshop participation. Each writer is able to use this funding to fit their individual needs.

You can view the residency fellowships program here.

The online fellowships will run at a similar timeframe to the residency fellowships with key interactions scheduled between 6 September to 20 September, however participants will be encouraged to work at their own pace around this timeframe.

Online residencies will include:

·       Facilitated professional networking opportunities throughout the two weeks, including the opportunity to share work, talk about process, and receive feedback from your peers.

·       A one-hour online session (one-on-one) with Varuna writing consultant Dr Carol Major.

Online residency participants need to allow at least one hour at specific times every day for programmed sessions, with the expectation that participants will also allow for some dedicated writing time around the timeframe of the residency.

Key dates

The opening date for applications is 19 February and the closing date is 26 March 2021. Results will be posted on the News page of Varuna’s website in April 2021.

Applicants will be asked to specify their preference between a residency fellowship and online fellowship.

What you need to send us

You will need to send us between 4,000 and 10,000 words from the beginning of your manuscript.  For poetry, you will need to send us a selection of 10 poems.

What we are looking for

We are looking for New South Wales-based, emerging or established writers who are developing new work in creative writing or illustration. This could include literary fiction, genre fiction, non-fiction, illustration and graphic novels, young adult fiction, junior fiction, poetry, or writing for screen, theatre or radio.

Assessors will be looking at the level of achievement (works completed, published or produced, awards won), clarity of work focus and creative objectives (how you will use your time), professional benefits to the recipient (how this Fellowship and your current project will benefit your professional development), and the merit of your writing or creative work.

Fees

There is no application fee for this program, nor are there any program costs. In addition, some funds will be available to assist with travel costs to and from Varuna.
