Second hearing of Royal Commission investigates violence and abuse in group homes

The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (the Disability Royal Commission) continues this week with the second hearing in Melbourne, from Monday, December 2 to Friday, December 6, 2019.

This week’s hearing is examining the experiences of people with disability in group homes, a form of supported accommodation for up to six people with disability.

On Monday, the Commission heard testimony relating to people with disability experiencing sexual violence and abuse, both people with intellectual and physical disabilities, living in group homes. Further, people with disability and their families told the Commission they felt unsafe and had no control over their lives while living in group homes.

On Wednesday, Dr Patsie Frawley told the hearing that this model of supported accommodation should be dismantled and replaced with a model allowing people with disability to determine their own lives.
