Media Release

The full media release of the resumption of hearings with Melbourne Hearing 4 follows here:

The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety will conduct a hearing in Melbourne from 15 to 17 July 2020 to examine the provision of mental health care, oral health care and allied health care to people receiving aged care services. These services often play a critical role in ensuring the health and wellbeing of older people.

In December 2019, the Royal Commission conducted a hearing on the interface between the health care and aged care systems. The upcoming hearing in Melbourne will inquire into that interface for mental health, oral health and allied health care services, and how those services could be improved for aged care recipients.

The hearing will examine, among other things, possible improvements in funding models, training for aged care workers, and incentives for health care professionals to provide these services to people in their homes. It will also consider the role and responsibility of approved providers of aged care services to ensure aged care recipients receive the mental, oral and allied health care they need.

The Royal Commissioners will hear from a range of witnesses including a recipient of home care services, a family member of a resident, practitioners, representatives from peak bodies, and senior representatives of State and Commonwealth health departments. Witnesses will not appear in person with all but one appearing via video link, and one via telephone. Those Royal Commission staff not based in Victoria will also take part in the hearing via video link.

Attendance at this hearing will be closed to the public and to the media due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The hearing will be accessible through live video streaming on the Commission’s website. Transcripts will also be made available of the proceedings.

The witness list for the hearing beginning tomorrow is available on the website
