International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is held on 3 December each year. The UN Theme for 2021 is Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world’.

IDPwD is a United Nations observed day aimed at increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. It's a day to celebrate the contributions and achievements of people with disability and promote inclusion through ambassadors.

  • Virtual Event on “Reducing Inequalities Through Technologies: A Perspective on Disability Inclusive Development”, 
    8:00 to 9:30 am (NY time),
    Co-organized by United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The event aims at increasing awareness of the importance of supporting innovation ecosystems to spur the development of new and improved assistive technologies; promote understanding of the workings of the assistive technologies industry; and share insights on the landscape and global trends in this cluster of technologies as a complement to universal design The event will also highlight select initiatives by members of the UN family to support informed discussions relating to the realization of the objectives of the CRPD and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Two FREE screen-based events celebrating the creativity of people with disability are set to be highlights of activities marking International Day Of People With Disability.

Presented with the support of national peak disability advocacy organisation People With Disability Australia, the two events are:

  • Dec 2 – 4: The world premiere season of four new video artworks by artists with disability at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art
  • Dec 17: The 5th annual Inclusive Film Festival live-streamed nationally from Sydney’s historic Petersham Town Hall.

The artworks will have FREE public screenings at the MCA on Thursday 2 December, 12.30 pm – 2.30 pm and on Sat 4 Dec 12.30 pm – 2.30 pm. The Saturday screening will be followed by a Q&A with the artists. All artworks can be viewed with closed captioning, audio description or Auslan interpretation.
