As NSW follows the roadmap to opening the state, it is important to know how to prove your COVID-19 vaccination status. This will become important in visiting certain places between October 11 and December 1 2021.

Let's start with what places will require you to show a proof of a FULL Covid-19 vaccination if you are over 16 years of age. If you have an exemption you will need to show this instead.

Venues include:

  • Hospitality venues such as cafes and pubs etc.
  • Non-critical retail stores.
  • Personal services such as hairdressing or beauty etc.
  • Sporting, recreation and entertainment venues and events such as gyms and cinemas.

Places such as grocery stores and pharmacies will remain accessible for all, regardless of vaccination status.

So how can you prove your vaccination status?

The good news is there is more than one option to cater for the needs of everyone. You can do any of the following if you have a medicare card:

  • Download the Express Plus Medicare Mobile App on your phone or access Medicare online via the myGov portal. Your COVID-19 digital certificate will be available through both portals. You can then add this to your smartphone wallet for easy access.
  • You can print a hard copy of your COVID-19 digital certificate or your immunisation history statement.
  • The Service NSW app on your phone also allows you to add your COVID-19 Digital Certificate to it, this allows it to be shared as part of your QR code when checking into a venue.

Adding your COVID-19 Digital Certificate to Your Service NSW App

  1. Make sure you have the latest update of the Service NSW app. You can check this by visiting the app store and looking at the available updates.
  2. You will need to have the Express Plus Medicare app on your phone. If you do not have the app, Medicare Australia has a helpful guide on how to download and set up the app.
  3. Using the Express Plus Medicare app, navigate to 'Proof of Vaccinations', click 'View history', then click 'Share with check in app' below the COVID-19 digital certificate heading, followed by 'Service NSW'.If you have the latest version of the Service NSW app, your digital certificate will then appear across the top of the app.It will also integrate with your check in each time you use the QR code to check-in to premises.

What happens if you don't have a Medicare card?

  • You can call the Australian Immunisation Register on 1800 853 809 and ask for an immunisation history statement to be posted. This may take up to 2 weeks to arrive by mail.
  • You can still add a COVID-19 Digital Certificate to your smartphone wallet using the Individual Healthcare Identifiers Services via myGov.
  • You can access your immunisation history statement from My Health Record.

What if you have no smartphone or online access?

You can call the Australian Immunisation Register on the above number to request a copy in the post.

Please note: that if you had Medical Exemption for not receiving the COVID-19 Vaccination you can speak to your doctor about getting this added to your immunisation history.
