Vision Australia, NSW Spectacles Program

Gold framed spectacles are on a white background.

Can’t afford new glasses? You may be eligible for a free pair of single vision or bifocal glasses.

The NSW Spectacles Program provides government funded glasses and vision aids to eligible recipients.

Applications are open to seniors, children, people experiencing homelessness, those living in rural and remote areas, people with disability and Aboriginal and multicultural communities.

Under Vision Australia's administration, significant improvements have been made to the scheme, with a new online application and assessment process.

The process streamlines applications and product delivery for optometrists, and reduces waiting times for the delivery of glasses.

Funded by the NSW Department of Family and Community Services and administered by Vision Australia, the Program provides funding to participating optometrists and optical dispensers (providers) to supply optical aids to eligible applicants free of charge.

The program is available to Centerlink recipients and low wage earners.

Special conditions exist for single parents receiving maintenance, residents of remote areas, or return applicants experiencing a significant change in vision within two years.

Information for providers

Vision Australia’s service delivery model enables participating optometrists to use their own supply chains to source and supply spectacles for eligible patients. Spectacles and optical appliances are then reimbursed at a set rate.

The new service delivery model and online portal are designed to streamline provider and patient experience when accessing the NSW Spectacles Program.

The Program’s aim is to improve vision and avoid preventable decline in eye health.
