Living with Memory Loss Program

In a group format, participants have the opportunity to: Tell their story of memory loss; Reflect on the impact of their diagnosis; Develop an understanding of the importance of self-care; Enhance their skills for communication with others, and for problem-solving; Extend their knowledge about legal and financial issues. This program is FREE OF CHARGE. It runs for 7 weeks on the same day each week, Each session runs in the morning for 2 hours, Light refreshments are included at no charge. Managing Disability at Work: The things you need to know

This event runs from 9 am – 3:30 pm (includes lunch) at University of Technology Sydney. A joint initiative being run by the UTS, the University of Sydney, UNSW, the Australian Employers Network on Disability and the NDCO Program (CDS, UWS). Who should come? All currently enrolled University students in NSW/ACT with a disability thinking about career pathways. Does that mean you? Perhaps you don’t think of yourself as having a disability but the definition is broad and includes dyslexia, mental illness and ongoing medical conditions. The focus is on assisting you to maximise all opportunities whilst still at university, find the best career pathway, and how to access it after graduation. The forum will provide practical strategies and information, the opportunity to network and meet with other students and experts in the field. Why come? To find out more about practical career strategies and programs to give you an edge in a tough job market. To participate in workshops: What do I want to do? Designed as an introductory session for the beginner job seeker, it includes information on career exploration and researching jobs. Finding the job you want! Covers information on services such as: Stepping Into, WAM, DES Services, career counselling and networking. The Application - selling your skills and dealing with disclosure. Contains information on disclosure, selling your strengths, resume tips. The Interview – making a good impression and addressing workplace adjustments. Have you ever wanted to know more about the Vietnamese culture? What do some client’s from a Vietnamese background think about using your services? The aim of this session is to share cultural specific information with service providers. Topics include: Basic information about Viet Nam – the welfare system, geography, migration history, Common attitudes towards disability, getting older and using welfare services, Hear the personal experience of a person of Vietnamese background who has used community services, Hear a specialist service provider talking about what services can do to make links with the Vietnamese community, Learn about resources that can be used to help make your service easier to access for people of Vietnamese background. Counselling Support Groups for Parents of Children with Special Needs

Carers NSW fund these groups so parents can meet and tell their story, give and gain support from other families and carers, focusing on how to take better care of ourselves and not ‘burn out’. Led by a counsellor who has a child with Autism, the groups deal with issues of family and relationships, the grief process and how to cope on bad days. They can help with the feelings of loss, isolation, exhaustion and the difficult role of parenting different children. Where? Lizard Centre, Conference Room 1, Level 3, 126 Greville Street, Chatswood NSW 2067. When? Mondays - Group 1 is 9.30am-11.30am, Group 2 is 12.30pm-2.30pm. 'Let's Talk about Caring' Conference

This event runs from 8.30am-4.00pm at Hornsby RSL, 4 High St, Hornsby. The “Let’s Talk About Caring” Biannual Conference 2010 aims to inspire carers and workers to talk about their caring experiences; to talk about their thoughts and feelings; to meet other carers; to gain knowledge about looking after themselves and to have fun! The first main objective of the conference is to get delegates talking about “caring issues” and to acknowledge the amazing role they play in the community, secondly the conference aims to get delegates to look at their health and wellbeing to ensure that they are activate participants in their own wellbeing. While the focus is on Northern Sydney, carers from outside the area are also welcome. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided, and for carers in Northern Sydney, respite services can be organised when the booking is made. All this adds up to an informative, revitalising and free day out for a very deserving part of our community. Workshop: Lets get started… getting ready for school and life An opportunity to explore the lifelong benefits of, and strategies to achieve, an inclusive education for children with a developmental disability. Developmental disability includes but is not limited to autism, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, spina bifida and multiple disability. The workshop aims to help you start planning a positive future and looking at what is needed to achieve an inclusive education. It is especially relevant for families of children preparing for school or in the early years of school. Information Session: Family Advocacy know how to build a positive vision for people with developmental disability Come for morning tea and a chat that could provide you with ideas, contacts and information. You will hear about Family Advocacy’s library, workshops, provision of advocacy related advice free over the phone, newsletter, journal and more. Who should attend? Morning Session: Introduction to Acquired Brain Injury, Afternoon Session: ABI & Challenging Behaviour What is an acquired brain Injury? How can a brain injury affect a person’s cognitive and physical abilities? What strategies can I use to support people with an acquired brain injury? How can I assist people with an acquired brain injury with challenging behaviour? This full day workshop aims to develop an awareness and understanding of the unique nature of acquired brain injury, the impact it has on the individual, their family and carers, and how your service can effectively manage these issues. The sessions will include a mix of factual information and personal stories as well as the opportunity to discuss your own experiences and to formulate constructive strategies. This workshop will be beneficial for anyone working with individuals with an acquired brain injury such as: Community workers and case managers; Aged care workers; Employment agency staff; Health care professionals; Rehabilitation advisors; Attendant care staff; Disability workers. At this workshop: the morning session, introduction to Acquired Brain Injury, will be presented by BIA NSW trainer and case manager, Rebekah Loukas. Information Technology Aged Care conference coming to Melbourne

The fourth Annual Information Technology in Aged Care (ITAC) conference will be held on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 July at the Softel Melbourne on Collins. The conference is jointly hosted by the Aged Care Association Australia, Aged and Community Services Australia and the Health Informatics Society of Australia; the conference will bring together local and international experts across the fields of community care, medication management and assistive technology. The theme of the conference is 'Smart Aged Care - The E-Health Revolution' and will emphasise the importance of information technology in establishing a sustainable, quality focused aged care environment. The educational components of the event are to be complimented by a networking reception after the final plenary session on Monday afternoon, with the ITAC Awards Dinner to be hosted on Tuesday night at the Regent Theatre.

A Mini Conference to Wet Your Taste Buds

The Hydrocephalus Support Association Inc has been planning for a special event for a number of years now and has finally come up with what they think should be worthwhile for all families. The aim of the exercise is to bring as many of their families together as possible in a social atmosphere. The social will be interspersed with at least two guest speakers – one will speak on some research work being done – and possibly Q and A time. The event will be held at the Baden Powell Scout Centre, Lyon Barton Hall, Pomona St, Pennant Hills. The cost is $10 for financial members (person with hydrocephalus), $15 for family of financial members and $25 for non financial members and people who are not members. The event will include afternoon tea, pre dinner drinks, dinner and desert. The event is not suitable for electric wheelchairs, some lifting of ordinary wheelchairs will be required due to steps. Mission Australia: Manage Conflict Through Negotiation

This is a one day, Nationally Accredited Training presented by an RTO (CRTC) who specialise in teaching skills for the effective management of conflict situations with clients. This training day is tailored to residential and community services staff who work with adult clients who may be hostile, aggressive, difficult to negotiate with including clients with poor mental health. The interactive training provides theory, demonstration and discussion of practical application of conflict resolution techniques as well as experiential learning. Vision Australia is offering a Career Education Workshop for teenagers in the July school holidays. This two day interactive workshop will be conducted by staff from Employment and Children's Services. Who should come: Highschool students aged 14 to 18 years who want to learn more about preparing for work and future careers. Parents are asked to attend the introduction session on the first morning. The event runs on both the 8th and the 15th of July from 10am until 2pm (including lunch - gold coin donation). It is asked that you commit to both weeks. The event will be held at Vision Australia, Enfield Office, 4 Mitchell St, Enfield. The TAFEs are collecting pre-loved / gently worn shoes for children and adults in poor regions of Africa and Nepal. 300 million children have never owned a pair of shoes, though many live in urban areas and suffer foot injuries. Wearing shoes to an interview can also help people find employment. A pair of quality shoes (hardly worn) costs 2-3 months savings to a poor person. Add a pair of socks, if you wish. FaHCSIAs Indigenous Leadership Program aims to develop the leadership capacity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, women and youth. Participants on the program benefit from an interactive learning environment where they are supported to develop a vision for the future and encouraged to engage in planning to achieve that vision. They learn more about themselves, meet new people, share ideas, develop new skills and gain unique experiences to grow their potential as leaders. The program aims to achieve this through: Inspiring you to reach your highest potential, Encouraging you to share a positive vision for Indigenous people, Supporting you to gain knowledge and skills and unique experiences, Empowering your personal leadership journey and supporting you to mentor upcoming leaders, Providing you with the skills to help you reach your goals and aspirations and inspire and help those around you.
