Updates to the Building Code of Australia (BCA) for 2010 have been finalised, and as building industry practitioners you need to know what changes are coming into effect. Presenters from the ABCB will inform you of these changes at a series of information seminars to be conduced in capital cities around Australia. In addition to formal presentations, there will be ample opportunity for informal conversations with others involved in ensuring equitable access to the built environment as well as the opportunity to see first hand what makes good access through participation in a number of activities. How do you care for someone with a mental illness without losing sight of your own needs? If you are an adult young carer who cares for someone with a mental illness then you are invited to join others like you in a telephone group where, over nine weeks, you can share stories while receiving support and guidance in how to cope in your caring role. Childrens camp information: Children, teenagers and adults can participate in various games and recreation activities, make friends and have fun. Activities may include: canoeing, sailing, archery, bike activities, basketball, tennis, soccer, indoor recreation, netball, swimming, beach games, dance, craft. Volunteer carers from previous camps, new community carers and students from Southern Cross University will be rostered on throughout the camp, with 1:2 (or 1:1 if needed) support. For participants who normally have a personal carer, a carer also must attend the camp. The Childrens (9-17 years old) camp will run from Saturday the 24th of April at 9.30am until Sunday the 25th of April at 3pm. The cost is $210 per child, including all meals, accommodation, activities, coaching and support staff. The Camp will be at Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation Centre, Pacific Parade, Lennox Head. In the pursuit of evidence-based research, three new papers on issues around adolescence, severe intellectual disability and behaviour disturbance will be presented for discussion by an expert panel and the audience.Speakers: Gary Raftl – Behaviour Management Consultant will discuss the manner by which a young person with intellectual disability and challenging behaviour manages within their environment and the powerful consequences of that behaviour on the family members who share that environment. Dr Kristy Muir – Director, Disability Studies and Research Centre, UNSW will speak on supporting full participation and the rights of all family members where families include a young person with a disability and challenging behaviour. Dr David Dossiter – Associate Professor, Area Director of Mental Health, Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Child Psychiatrist with a special interest in intellectual disability and autism will discuss how much should we be worrying about the mental health needs of children and adolescents with intellectual disability in the context of our understanding of mental wellbeing of those without intellectual disability? The group explores mental health, while identifying the different ways in which young people cope. Mental Health Carers ARAFMI and the Sanctuary Respite Centre North Head are offering a Chinese Carers Retreat for Chinese family members/partners/friends who support or live living with someone with mental health issues and live in the Northern Sydney region. This 2 day retreat provides a good opportunity to have a break and talk to others in the same situation. Activities can be chosen, and an activity plan catered to the group’s needs and interests. Activities may include massage and qigong classes. Carers do not need to stay overnight to take part in the activities. The retreat will run from Friday 16 – Sunday 18 April weekend retreat. Weekday retreat Tuesday 20- Thursday 22 April. It will be held at 13 St Barbaras Avenue, North Head (Manly). Nelson Bay - Our favourite! Day one: Experience morning tea at Brooklyn, a picnic lunch, exploration of Nelson Bay and dinner at the local Club in Nelson Bay. For 7 years, St Ives Soccer Club has run a modified version of the game for children with special needs. This includes a 'chaperone' being allowed on the field to guide play. It is a great opportunity to participate in an activity outside school with more than 30 peers. The even will run on Saturdays from 1pm until 2pm starting on the 17th of April at Toolang Oval, Toolang Avenue, St Ives. 17 April 2010, 1.00pm-4.00pm in the Auburn Town Hall. The Youth Multicultural Awareness day event will include the cultural fashion parade and the display/parade of the T-shirts designed young participants. There will be performances by young people and information relevant to young people’s need and interest will be displayed/distributed on the day. Program Activities: 1. Information Session: Information session will be held during the drop in at AYC to register interested young people for the fashion parade. It is expected that 25 to 30 young people, both male and female will participate in the event. 4 PM, 11 March 2010 Venue: Auburn Youth Centre (AYC). 2. Make up Workshop and First Rehearsal: We are communicating with Body Shop to provide support on the day. The workshop will engage the participant in a discussion about self image and self esteem combined with make up artist providing make up advice to the participants. The second half of the workshop will be rehearsal with the participants. 1 – 4 PM, 7 April Venue: Auburn Community Development Network (ACDN). 3. Cultural Sharing and Second Rehearsal: The first part of the session will start with each participant sharing about their culture and costume they are wearing for the fashion parade. Second half of the workshop will be rehearsal at ACDN and Auburn Town Hall. 1 – 4 PM, 14 April Venue: Auburn Community Development Network (ACDN)/ Auburn Town Hall. 4. T- Shirt Design Workshop: The workshop will start with information sharing on young people’s health and wellbeing. The workshop will be facilitated by High Street Youth Health Service. This will be followed by a design and T-shirt printing workshop using the facilities available at the venue. Date to be confirmed, High Street Youth Health Centre. 5. Third Rehearsal: The last rehearsals will be held at the Town hall. 3 – 5 PM, 16 April Venue: Auburn Town Hall. 6. The MHCC Connect Program uses a 2 day interactive workshop delivery mode and is designed to promote workplace skill development. ‘Building Resilience: From Surviving to Thriving’ - Hosted by Julie McCrossin, the event will touch on building resilience in the workplace, schools, community and culture. Professor Tim Sharp from the Happiness Institute, Tony Cotton from Australian Federal Police and Ingrid Poulson from Steadfast Training will speak on building resilience in the workplace. Gary Moore from Marrickville Council, Greg Wilson, MHA Ambassador, Charmaine Jones from Surry Hills Tenants Association, and Cherie Carlton from the Institute of Psychiatry, will speak about the community resilience building; as well as Dr. Toni Noble and Lyn Worsley who will be talking about this process in a school setting. Bronwyn Batten will speak about an Indigenous example of building resilience. The Living Library offers borrowers an opportunity to understand the lives of people in their community better - such as those who have faced hardship or prejudice, or people from diverse life experiences and backgrounds. It is just like a regular library with one difference: in the Living Library the “books” are people. There will be some great Living Books available for the Lidcombe community to read at the two hour session, including a book who speaks about Sufism, one on Aboriginal History and Culture, one who speaks about being a Lesbian in Auburn, and a Living Book that can explain how Contemporary and Modern Islam work in Australia today. So, come and have a cuppa and chat with someone from your community that you might not normally get to meet. Siblings (in years 3-5 and years 6-8) of children with disabilities. Each day will start off with ice-breakers and non-threatening interactive chat-groups and each afternoon will have a special focus: sports and crafts, music madness and an afternoon outing to Luna Park. Need to bring morning tea and packed lunch, drink bottle and hat. Week 1 is Wednesday the 7th until Friday the 9th of April. Week 2 is Tuesday the 13th until Thursday the 15th of April (all days run from 9.30am until 4.30pm). The program will be held at St Kevin's Primary School, 57-59 Oaks Avenue, Dee Why. Teens aged 15+ with intellectual disabilities become buddies with teens without disabilities to enjoy bushcrafts, handcrafts, sports and outings. Each cabin has 3 campers, 3 buddies and an older leader. The camp will be held at Camp Kedron, Emmaus Road off Tumburra Street, Ingleside. There are two camps: Camp 1 – Buddies to assist campers - Tuesday to Sunday 6-11 April. Camp 2 – Special needs campers - Wednesday to Saturday 7-10 April. The cost of a camp is $120 (incl GST) including all meals, activities and accommodation. The camp assists families in providing a holiday for their children, at no cost to the family. Activities include swimming, outings, and adventure activities like flying fox and rope courses. The Camp will be held from Saturday the 2nd of April to Sunday the 9th of April 2010 at the Salvation Army Collaroy Youth and Community Centre, Collaroy Beach. Bookings close on the 12th of March.
