Now in its fourth year, T4321 (or ‘Tea for 3-21’) is a simple way for everyone in the community to celebrate the achievements of children and adults with Down syndrome, and raise a few useful dollars to support them in achieving their full potential. You can put on a Morning or Afternoon Tea at your home, school, workplace, club, church, local park or wherever, inviting friends, colleagues, neighbours, breaking open the tim tams, baking some scones, or asking your local bakery to donate some lammies... put on the kettle, and you’re away. The date of the event (the 21st of March) signifies the fact Down Syndrome is caused by nothing more than an extra chromosome - 3 copies of the 21st chromosome (or '3-21'). Coeliac Awareness Week is held each year from 13-20 March organised by the Coeliac Society of Australia to generate more awareness regarding Coeliac Disease and the gluten free diet. Coeliac disease (pronounced Seel-ee-ak), sometimes called gluten-sensitive enteropothy, is a medical condition and is a permanent intestinal intolerance to dietary gluten. To improve awareness and diagnosis rates, a cheeky new campaign called: ‘Is your MOJO Missing?’ is being launched during Coeliac Awareness Week from 13-20 March by The Coeliac Society and the Coeliac Research Fund. The campaign urges anyone with typical symptoms of coeliac disease – unexplained tiredness, bloating, diarrhoea and/or constipation – to ask their doctor for coeliac tests to either confirm or eliminate the presence of the condition. The MOJO message is simple. If you suffer from unexplained coeliac symptoms: make an appointment with your doctor, organise coeliac tests, judge the results with your doctor, omit gluten from your diet if your doctor advises it. For more information contact the Coeliac Society on 1300 458 836 or email info@coeliacsociety.com.au.

DIABETES AND THE EYES: In Australia, approximately 800,000 people have diabetes yet only half of them know they have it. Apart from the systemic complications that diabetes can cause, it can also adversely affect the eyes. Both treated and untreated diabetes can lead to Diabetic Retinopathy, a pathological condition of the retina (the back of the eye) which develops in diabetics. Diabetic Retinopathy can reduce a person's sight and several Australian studies have found that 35 to 49% of diabetics have Diabetic Retinopathy. However, as there are many undiagnosed diabetics, it is possible that 200,000 people in Australia are affected by Diabetic Retinopathy but not aware of it. The Orthoptic Association of Australia encourages all people with diabetes to have a full eye examination at least every 2 years in order to prevent Diabetic Retinopathy or to treat it in a timely way to reduce the risk of preventable vision loss. Orthoptic Awareness Week 2010 will run from the 8th of March until the 12th of March 2010. For more information on events and the week contact the Orthoptic Association of Australia on (02) 9895 4463.
