The 19th annual Tri-state Conference runs from the 28th of February to the 2nd of March, and will bring aged care professionals from across South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria to consider the changing face and much needed reform of the aged and community care industry amidst a context of mounting community expectations for increased consumer choice, and current and future projections of growth in demand for quality aged and community care services. Presented by Aged and Community Services SA and NT Inc (ACS SA & NT) in association with Aged and Community Care Victoria (ACCV) and Aged and Community Services Association of NSW and ACT Inc (ACS NSW and ACT). On the 27th of February 2010, the Disabled Surfers Association Australia are holding their annual surfing day for people with any disability (volunteers are welcome). The event costs $20 for non-members while members/volunteers/carers are free. Attendees will be meeting at 9.30am with a 10am start at Collaroy Beach, Pittwater Road, Collaroy. Sport and Recreation Services in conjunction with our local sport/recreation providers, are holding a Sport Expo for people with a disability on Saturday, 27 February 2010. The Expo will provide participants with the opportunity to enjoy and learn about some local sport and recreation activities. The Expo is open to children and adults. Activities on the day will include soccer, cricket and table cricket, boccia, bowls, cycling and fitness activities provided by YMCA. VISACT will also be running activities for people with vision impairment. The Expo is open to people of all abilities including people with higher needs. Registrations are essential and numbers are limited. The Expo runs from 11.00am until 3.00pm and RSVP’s are due by the 18th of February 2010. ICEE Sunnies for Sight Day, an initiative of the International Centre for Eyecare Education (ICEE), is an annual event designed for school teachers who want to teach their students about vision, eye care and how kids can join the fight against avoidable blindness. ICEE invites teachers and children from early learning centres, primary and secondary schools across Australia to participate in ICEE Sunnies for Sight Day! Northside Community Connect Carers Program invites carers of someone who has a mental or physical disability, is frail aged, has dementia or an illness that requires another person to assist them with their daily living. The course explores the emotional and physical demands of caring, provides strategies to manage stress and connects carers with services and assistance available. The course will start at 10am until 12.30pm on the following Wednesdays: the 24th February and the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st of March 2010. The cost is $2 which includes light refreshments. The Murwillumbah Communities for Children YWCA will be launching another year of 2484 ‘Family and Children’s Services’ Forums. The first one for the year is on Wednesday, February 24th, 1 – 4pm (yummy light lunch/afternoon tea provided). Venue: The Coolamon Cultural Centre Tumbulgum Road, Murwillumbah. New services are welcome as well as services working with an older age groups i.e. Up to 12 yrs old. The forums are an opportunity for community and health services who work with families and children in the 2484 area, to come together and share local news eg events, funding opportunities, service activities; socialise and network; Work together on local events and campaigns; and identify gaps in the sector and to develop strategies to address them collaboratively. Throughout the past year, over 100 people with disability have participated in art workshops at Newcastle Community Art Centre through a program called 'Art from the Heart'. The workshops have been run by organisations: LeapFrog Ability, Lifestyle Solutions and Samaritans. Whilst at the workshops, participants have been able to express themselves through art and as a result have gained much confidence and boosted their self esteem. An exhibition of the artworks created during the workshops will be open in late February. The exhibition will be open to the public with artworks available for purchase. The exhibition will open on the 24th of February and run to the 14th of March 2010 at the Newcastle Art Space, 246 Parry St Newcastle West. For more information contact Brooke Cross on 0407 769 903. The workshops will focus on complaint handling and complaint systems, and will allow participants to examine different complaint behaviours as well as methods of resolving complaints. There will also be opportunities for participants to review their own complaint handling systems. The Frontline skills in complaint handling workshop will be held on the 24th of February or the 23rd of March and is recommended for all community services staff. The Effective complaint systems workshop will be held on the 15th of March and is recommended for all community services managers and coordinators. The courses will run all day and cost $170 per workshop (includes GST, lunch, a manual, resources and a certificate of attendance). Carers NSW fund these groups to enable parents to meet and tell their story, give and gain support from other families and carers. The focus is on how to take better care of ourselves and not ‘burn out’. The groups deal with issues of family and relationships. They can help with the feelings of loss, isolation, exhaustion and the impossible. The groups run for 2 hours, over 6 consecutive weeks and are run by a counsellor who is a mum of a child with Autism. The groups are held at the Lizard Centre (conference Room 2), 126 Greville St, Chatswood. They commence on Monday the 22nd Feb with 2 x 2 hr sessions running at 9.30am until 11.30 am and 12.30pm until 2.30pm. A dance party for 12-18 year olds with special needs, their siblings, carers and friends. Music, give-aways and games will be run by 'Hey DJ', including prizes for the best dressed. Carers (including group home, paid) must remain onsite if attending youth are not self-reliant. Entry to the party costs only $5 (carers are free) and will run from 7pm until 10pm at YOYOs Youth Centre, Forestway Shopping Centre, Frenchs Forest. This workshop is for parents, carers, educators and service providers who deal with sufferers of Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS). Sociology researcher Dr Ingrid Muenstermann conducted interviews and a survey into the social consequences of SMS, and ther personal stories prompted her to obtain a grant to bring this workshop together. With one international speaker, Brenda Finucane (Genetic Services, Elwyn, Pennsylvania) and five National speakers who are parents, carers and educators, this workshop promises to provide much information to people who are in contact with SMS sufferers. People with disability aged 16 and above are invited to develop their ability and creative expression, and have fun. Carers of a person attending are welcome to dance at no cost. Wear something comfortable for moving, sneakers or jazz shoes and bring a water bottle. The classes run on Saturdays from 10am until 11am in the Accessible Arts training room located on Wharf 4, Hickson Road. The Spastic Centre's Cerebral Palsy Institute will welcome scientists and practitioners from around the world. The theme is Across the Lifespan - from the prevention and aetiology of cerebral palsy, to early intervention of infants at risk, evidence based interventions, long term outcomes of key interventions (spasticity management, neuro- and orthopaedic surgery), changing participation and quality of life, and adult cerebral palsy (CP) outcomes. The 15 keynote speakers in the scientific program will present keynotes, seminars, free papers, advanced practitioner workshops with experts, posters and round tables. Features of the conference week will be a meeting of the World Cerebral Palsy Registers, evidence based guidelines for the use of Botulinum Toxin, an accredited course on early infant assessment and specialty seminars on the state of clinical practice in key disciplines (with local and international experts). This class is for people with or without disabilities. It has been running for four years. The class involves an interactive and controlled form of exercise for fitness and fun. This is a place where you can meet people while learning movement to music in a creative and fun environment. Classes are casual - there is no need to book or enrol for a set length of time. Just turn up and have fun! What to Wear Sneakers or socks. Non restrictive clothing such as track/dance pants, aerobic top, t-shirt, sweat-shirt.
