This features objects from Vision Australia's heritage collection, compelling accounts and examples of new technologies that are increasing the independence of Australians with low or no vision. The exhibition aims to educate about eye conditions, as well as offer an insight into how Australians who are blind or have low vision learn, work, play sport, create art and carry out everyday household tasks. Objects include the helmet and jersey of our local Paralympian cyclist Lindy Hou (and an interview with her and cycling partner Toireasa), Anthony Clark's judo jacket, a copy of a braille Playboy (1974), a cylindrical rotating braille map created by Australia's RF Tunley in the 1940s; Sonicguide glasses from the 1960s (used sounds to identify objects), a phone that captures text in image form and reads it aloud, and more. The exhibition features braille and large print labelling; audio guides available. Where: The Powerhouse Museum, 600 Harris Street, Ultimo. Accessible. When: 10am-5pm daily (except Christmas Day), 1 January 2009 to 26 January 2010. Cost: $10 Adult, $5 Children, $6 Concession, $6 Seniors, free Members, $25 Family of 4.
