Sydney Community College will begin to provide The Inclusive Community Education Program (ICEP)in October 2010. The aim of the program is to provide quality adult education at community college settings for people with a disability. There are 2 types of activities running within the ICEP pilot. The ICEP Flexible Respite program is a program specifically set up for adults with a disability. Courses are run by professional tutors and supported by tutors aids. The program is aimed at people with a disability who would like to learn or develop skills in a particular area but may require additional supports to do so. Courses will have no more than 10 participants at one time, and will run for 10 week periods, over 4 terms. Sydney Community College will also run special events throughout the year for students to attend, such as celebration events, social groups and awards nights. All ICEP participants will drive the development of college course ideas, and will have an active role in developing their own person centred learning plan. The mainstream options program is another program within the ICEP pilot, that aims to encourage and support the participation of adults with a disability into the mainstream community college courses. ICEP staff will provide the appropriate support to ensure the inclusion of the learners into the courses of their choice, such as course fees, transition support or technical aids. The ICEP pilot aims to provide respite for carers, but also to give people with a disability the opportunity to develop social networks within their local community settings. Future Courses will be determined by the needs and wants of the participants, next term we will be trialling: - sculpture and design; - computer skills and social networking; - community gardening and sustainable living; - Dance and movement; - Art Therapy & - Healthy Lifestyles. Throughout the 2 years of the pilot there will be NO COST to adult learners with a disability to attend or participate in ICEP Sydney Community College courses. Tutor costs, staff support costs and course equipment will be paid for through the ICEP funding. Sydney Community College was also successful in securing some funding to pay for transport for individuals to access the program, when in situations of isolation. The ICEP program will be based at Sydney Community College- Rozelle Campus in the Inner West of Sydney. The building has recently been renovated to ensure suitable access for those with mobility limitations. The campus is located just off Victoria Rd, is easily accessible via public transport, located less than 10 minutes from Sydney CBD, and boasts beautiful harbour views, art studios, training rooms, IT suites and dance/drama halls.
